House Approves Additional Immigration Reforms

Washington, D.C. – In addition to approving a resolution honoring the men and women of the U.S. Border Patrol, Representative Bud Cramer (Ala.-05) announced today that the House approved by voice vote legislation requiring the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to develop a plan to determine how the Border Patrol can better recruit and retain Border Patrol agents.

"Despite being understaffed with limited resources, the men and women of the Border Patrol continue to do an outstanding job protecting our borders," said Cramer.  "Today's legislation encourages the Homeland Security Department to recruit additional agents to help strengthen the security of our borders and prevent the flow of illegal immigration."

Today's bill, the More Border Patrol Agents Now Act, requires the Homeland Security Department to submit its plan for additional recruitment to Congress within six months of this bill's enactment.  The bill also permits the Department to offer recruitment bonuses to entice new hires and retention bonuses to prevent the loss of existing agents.
